wow... I find it completely amazing that you had such an experience with Jenn, Barb. I saw her twice, once in support for the Lay It Down disc, the other time in support for The Way I Am, and both times she was amazing, both during and AFTER the show (AFTER would be where our experiences differ I'd imagine).
She recalled meeting me the first time (when she was opening for Third Day) after the second show, and after signing a photo AND a shirt, got embarassed when I complimented her ability on the guitar and (obviously jokingly) asked me backstage to jam on a couple of acoustics. Alas, it wasn't to be, as the remainder of the meet and greet got rained out at the outdoor festival she was playing in rural Alabama, but nonetheless the fact that my favorite singer-songwriter (both then AND now) took the time to talk to me and try to know her fans still sticks with me. (thought it must be noted that she ran back, in the rain, and took time to converse, sign autographs for, and shake hands with every single fan that stood to wait for her, rain or NO rain)
Oh and Robert:-)
the rumors are true - head over to Jenniferknapp.com or just check her myspace - there's a new single, and she played her first show back on September 24th. Early impressions have noted a different feel to her music, a bit of anger, and some "racy" lyrics to say the least, including some language that might offend some. Personally I don't feel that she was served by being an artist ONLY marketed to the Christian market, I feel that it hurt her career as well as that of other artists (*coughcoughThirdDaycough*) and so if she can get away from the yoke of CCM she'll prosper, as she now has no obligation (or so I'm told) to Gotee Records.
"Peace at last not far away, empty sheet, a borrowed grave:
salvation"
lyrics that touched my soul, a voice and a message that reaffirmed my once-abandoned faith... she spoke to me when I WASN'T a Christian, that MUST be worth something.

The only people who seem to listen to music that "makes the Gospel clear" are people who are already saved. That approach doesn't really work all that well on people who don't already believe and I'm proof, but what do I know?

This is from wikipedia:

On August 28, 2009, Patrol Magazine reported that Knapp's management confirmed she is "starting to write and record again."[6]

It's reported that she is doing a concert in LA in late Sept.

WOW!

I totally agree with "j". Dave's article made me sad. Inasmuch as Jennifer's music moved me to worship, etc, so does the "watered down" music on the 'family friendly' radio in the 'Kent area' (really, Dave, Kent? You can't say 'Seattle' out loud? We all know that is where the only Christian station heard in Kent is. Don't make such comments if you're going to be such a chicken!). Frankly, if it wasn't for the "watered down Christian radio station in SEATTLE, I would never have heard of Jennifer Knapp. And apparently her music was "watered down" because if these stations hadn't played her music, she wouldn't have sold as many albums as she had. If her fans, certainly the vast majority, didn't come from the Christian radio, where would her fans have learned about her?
I respect that she wasn't afraid to write/sign about the messier stuff of life. We all go through it, it's part of life, Christian or otherwise for that matter. But so is the good stuff. MercyMe & Jeremy Kemp's influences have been just as big as Jennifer's. And her label or former label, Gotee - which is owned by Toby Mac by the way - has produced many, many amazing artists siging about the same things.
I saw Jennifer in concert (Creation West, I think it was in 1999 (or maybe 2000)). She was awesome. However, her attitude was far from awesome. She acted like a spoiled brat who refused to sign autographs and referred to herself several times as "the big rock star". perhaps it is coincidence that after her last album didn't get the rave reviews that were expected, she dissapeared. Perhaps not. Perhaps she is busy writing her best stuff ever. Only time will tell. But when/if she surfaces, if she is still singing about the Lord, it is on Christian radio stations that we will hear her (unless she is willing to "white-wash" her message down enough for mainstream and I pray she would never white-wash her beliefs).

Read the article concerning the transformation of John Macarthur's church at the link following this excerpt:
---------
Of interest, Grace Community Church elder and executive director of Grace to You, Phil Johnson, is a Baptistic Calvinist. This statement appears on his website: “Theologically, Phil is a committed Calvinist—with a decidedly Baptistic bent.” (Who is Phillip R. Johnson?) Even more interesting is this statement: “He...is a member of the Fellowship of Independent Reformed Evangelicals (FIRE).” The slogan of FIRE is “In essentials Unity, In non-essentials Liberty, in all things Charity.” (FIRE) Why is this interesting? FIRE’s slogan is nearly identical to the slogan of Phoenix Freemasonry! “It is the glory of Masonry to teach Unity in essentials, Liberty in details, Charity in all things; and by this sign its spirit must at last prevail.”

Jennifer Knapp was a huge part of bringing me back into fellowship with Christ many years ago...she opened my world and showed me that there is really good, meaningful, Christian music out there. Music one can worship God with...music that stirs our souls. I would love, like many, to hear from her again. But if we do not, I thank God for her and will cherish what she has brought to us for a time.

I've followed and listened to Jen's music for a LONG time... and her music really carried me through my teen and college years. Her music was a translation of the thoughts in my head and the battle in my heart. If Jen's battle was anything like mine, and I believe it is/was, then I hope that Jen has transcended that battle as I have been fortunate enough to do. There have been rumors about Jen's sexuality, and I have no business asking what people do in their private lives, but it is my firm belief that Jen's music was so self-depreciating and full of asking for forgiveness from sin that she did struggle with her sexuality. I just hope she knows there is freedom from that self-loathing mindset, and that God has created her in His image. He created her just as she is, and He doesn't want her to try and change what He has created - an incredible person who may happen to be a lesbian. She can honor and glorify God while being a lesbian, and I hope she knows that, if she indeed does feel that she's a lesbian. If not, then I'll be the first to admit I was wrong on this one, but I just wanted to get that out there.

Jennifer Knapp is an incredible musician. Period. Christian industry or not. And personally, given the obsession on fame and riches that the Christian industry supports, I'd love to see her come back as an independent artist. That way she could really express and explore her artistry without feeling judged, or held back, by the "lords" of the Christian music industry.

I respect that she may have wanted to leave the life on the road and settle down into a more "normal" life. But I sure wish she'd find a way to continue to share her artistry, inspiration, and gift of music. There are no other artists like her... and few that will ever be like her! She truly is a "Diamond in the Rough"!

This article puts words to my thoughts about Christian radio SO WELL, and I just thought you should know. THANK YOU. And even things I didn't know I thought. I've hated the deception and attempt-at-mass-appeal of "family friendly" since day one, but I didn't realize it was part of a larger trend, and this elaborates on all the little twinges of weirdness I got whenever I heard it (I always just thought I hated it because it seemed like an unbiblical lie... and that is true. But there is more).

I love Jennifer Knapp's music, lyrics - my all time favorite up with Rich Mullins, Keith Green, Third Day, Over the Rhine - though Jennifer tops them all- almost every song I love- so real, so folksy, so thought provoking- she waits to produce music instead of just doing it for profit- and if she is done, i will be sad- but God has used her in so many ways to heal- her music does that....I love Trinity and Lay it Down esp.
